Beneath, It Speaks is an editorial and publication design project that listens to the sounds of the city’s underlayers.
We approach subway tunnels, bomb shelters, underground corridors, and empty parking lots as the city’s subconscious—spaces where machines, air, water, and concrete speak in their own language. These sounds lack grammar, yet they form the hidden structure of urban existence.
At its core lies a question: whose voices are heard, and whose are muted? The mechanical, environmental, and non-linguistic sounds we often ignore are equally part of the city’s narrative. Editorial design here is less about representation than about attunement—inviting readers to encounter the invisible yet undeniable breath, vibration, and resonance of the city.
a.Book
This book is no
t a complete archive, nor a systematic study. It is a parallel exploration of listening and seeing. Images are used to reconstruct the density of sound; text traces the drift of perception. The act of turning a page becomes a way of listening.
b.Concept Video
In design, we emphasize dislocation, gaps, and resonance: the layout resists flat order, instead layering fragments like echoes; spacing between letters mimics footsteps stretching and fading in a tunnel; tension between image and white space mirrors the way underground sounds approach and retreat.
